Madrona’s Roots

The madrona tree is native to the Pacific Northwest. This beloved species with its striking colors and versatile bark and berries has long offered sustenance, curatives, and shelter to peoples and animals of the region. The madrona is rooted principally in the Pacific coast due to a complex interdependence between her roots and the coastal soil. She is the perfect symbol of interconnectivity between all living things in the Salish Coast.

Madrona Gifts is fashioned on a similar premise of interconnectivity. Our business depends on the talents of local artisans who themselves rely on the bounties of the region we inhabit. These bounties sustain us all, and we in turn protect and sustain them. This model of sustainable, community-centered commerce is at the root of what we do; values-based gifting is at the heart of it.

We acknowledge, with humility, that the land of our region today is the territory of the People of the Salish Sea. Their presence is imbued in the waterways, shorelines, valleys, and mountains of these traditional homelands of the Coast Salish People. May we nurture our relationship with our Coast Salish neighbors and uphold the shared responsibilities to their homelands where we all reside.

FAQ

  • Oh so much! Our gifts are about as local as it gets, sourced primarily from a 60-mile radius of our home base in Bellingham, WA. That means they don’t travel far to reach us, saving on packaging and transport emissions. Our items are mostly plant-based and/or organic, wildcrafted and/or sustainably sourced, small-batch and/or handcrafted. Individual product packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable as much as possible. Our boxes are elegant in their simplicity (we do not double box!) with a focus on recycled and recyclable packaging and zero waste. Plus we use 100% carbon-neutral shipping. Oh, and did we mention we give 3% of our sales of Curate Gifts to local social and environmental causes? Rest assured that your gift from us will reflect your values.

  • Being carbon neutral means keeping your net release of CO2e (CO2 equivalent) into the atmosphere at zero. Basically, whatever CO2e is emitted in the shipping process is canceled out by a process known as 'offsetting’. Offsetting is a financial contribution to support projects that reduce emissions, like regenerating precious forests, replacing old equipment with more efficient technology, or even training communities in beekeeping! Read more about it here.

  • That depends. First of all, sales tax is applied only to boxes shipped to a Washington State address, so if you are shipping outside of Washington State, your gift will be tax-free. (All the more reason to share far and wide!) Secondly, majority food-based curated boxes are tax free no matter where they ship. For all other curated and custom boxes, you will see a breakdown of applicable taxes at checkout.

  • If you’re wanting to gift four or more boxes, please call us to help you pull together a custom order. You may choose from our curated options, or we can help you design the perfect custom gift box. Depending on the numbers needed, we may require 1-2 weeks to secure inventory. Contact us for more information and help getting started.

  • We love working with local businesses and nonprofits! Business gifting offers a simple way to extend gratitude to clients, partners, and employees in a meaningful way. Our business clients are as varied as our products and include designers, manufacturers, schools, and real estate agents. Contact us to learn more.

  • You may place an order without an account, but if you have an account with us, you will be prompted for your login email and password at checkout. If you forget your password, the only way to change it is through the account page link in the website header - next to the shopping cart. Go back to the home page and click on the account icon - next to the shopping cart icon - and look for the prompt “Forgot password?”. A link to change your password will then be emailed to you.

Sharing the Bounty

We’re excited about sharing the bounty, not only in the wealth of flavors and talents from this region, but also in returns to our community. In addition to sourcing exclusively from local merchants, we dedicate a percentage of sales of our curated gift boxes to a variety of local social and environmental causes. You can see which cause each gift box supports in its description details and view a list of all organizations we support here. We strive to do well by doing good, for our partners, our community, and our planet.
